The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Hawaii is to enable all young people, especially those in need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The after-school hours are a critical time for youth as many are left to fend for themselves without positive adult supervision. Caravan Theatre partnered with the Boys and Girls Club to provide edu-taining theater in education skits that are contemporary and relevant themes.
The devised play, Perspectives, explores the issue of bullying with a nuanced maturity. Aside from looking at the perspectives of the victims, the budding playwrights dove into the complex minds of the bullies as well as the complexities of the bystanders and “friends” who are conflicted when caught up in a bullying situation. The answers are not always simple or pretty but it is through these tough conversations that leaders are forged. We also allow for frank dialogue that provides opportunities for learning, personal development and community engagement.
